As the first kingdom, capital and the centre of Buddhism in the island, it carries the reputation of being the hub of the present Sri Lankan civilization which has a growth of over 22 centuries. Archaeologists and historians consider that the wisdom enricher by Buddhism at Anuradhapura is the cradle of the national heritage. The UNESCO declared Anuradhaoura a world heritage site in 1982.
